River Road Newsletter!January 2023

Note from Pat Firstly, I hope you all had a very relaxing holiday break, and ready to jump back into a fun and creative Term 1! I would like to welcome our new students and families to the River Road family, and excited to see their music and creative pursuits and passion for music and the arts develop in our creative learning environments! I would also like to welcome new teachers Annie and Rory to our teaching cohort, and welcome back Finn, Paul, Neil, Joe, Paige, and Tim. I also welcome teachers and mentors who will be helping us with some of our community projects, so far including Tenille Salmon from Soul Images, and Sarah Schols from S.T.A.D.S. We have some awesome NEW free community projects kicking off this year, including: Youth Stories, a creative portfolio of youth aged 12-25 sharing their stories and experiences of living in the Wollondilly Tune In and Connect, a creative drop in sessions for people to learn an instrument but also filmmaking, photography, and visual art. Dilly Choir - welcoming all adults who have never been in a music group before, the Dilly Choir will be an eclectic mix of sounds and styles within an alternative and creative learning approach.
The above adds to our exisiting and returning community initiatives including our Tuesday night Creative Youth sessions, the Wollondilly Mens Music Cave, and our school holiday workshops. I look forward to seeing you all in the studio very soon, and wish you the very best in your creative ventures this term! See you all soon! Pat.

Here’s what’s been going on…

Our New Drum Room and Student Wall! Our new drum room is almost complete, providing an isolated drum space for lessons to take place, but will also provide an additional large teaching space and recording room. Also on the wall near the front door, is a blank wall fort students to add their mark to the studio. This may be their own drawing, words, lyrics, or photos. Paint markers are provided near the wall and encourage all students to add their own mark when next in, or waiting for their lesson. |

Youth Stories Out Youth Stories Project kicked off this school holidays with music, photography and drama workshops and projects underway. Tune In and Connect Our Tune in and Connect program is kicking off Saturday 4th February! This FREE program runs each Saturday from 12pm -4pm, allowing youth aged 6-18, to use the space as they wish but also engage with a scheduled creative arts teacher, for either free workshops or lessons. Couch Surfing Doco This documentary is continuing to come together where we are encouraging young people affected by homelessness to join us in creating a short documentary, led by youth, made by youth. Wollondilly Mens Music Cave The Wollondilly Mens Music Cave kicked of again for 2023, This included the first cook up of our new BBQ donated by the Bargo Mens Shed for us to use at our events Thanks to Wollondilly Shire Council for supporting this initiative! Australia Day Nod! A huge congratulations to Pat for receiving great local acknowledgement from Wollondilly Shire Council being awarded as a Local Hero at the Australia Day Awards. Pat and the whole River Road team work tirelessly to deliver premium creative arts education in a fun, engaging and inclusive way, and are thrilled to receive the award! |

FREE use of Practice and Recording Spaces for Students

Rehearsal and practice use of our spaces We are excited to announce that we are making our spaces freely available to enrolled students to use as rehearsal or practice spaces at times when rooms are available. This includes use of all our instruments, including the electric drum kits, guitars and pianos. Additionally this includes recording gear and microphones. Annie Annie joins the River Road family, brining a wealth of performance experience and educational delivery as our new vocal, piano and guitar teacher. Annie is a highly trained vocalist, who performs locally, with significant experience working with kids. |

Rory Rory is a highly sort after professional musician and performer in Australia, having studied music and Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and worked as a professional musician in both Sydney and Melbourne. We are super excited to have Rory part of our highly experienced music teaching team. |

Jordan Jordan is a highly skilled musician who has joined our team to teach the Didgeridoo! Jordan is also an amazing singer who provides a balance of creative expression and indigenous music education. |

Update After our expressions of interest in our last newsletter, we received a great response from community, and am happy to say the Dilly Choir will proceed! There are some details still to iron out included days/times, but welcome anyone yet to put their name down to follow this link to sign up! This Dilly Choir, will not be your usual choir, but an eclectic mix of sounds and styles within an alternative and creative approach. This also includes exploring other instruments including guitars, drums, percussion. It will be a safe and inclusive group, accepting people of all abilities, identities, and backgrounds, including people living with a disability. We are strongly encouraging adult beginners and those who have never engaged a music group before. As a creative academy, this choir will still be a learning experience - in typical River Road style of being a fun, relaxed, a little crazy, yet innovative creative experience.
